greetings auburn table tennis club members or “looking for sunshine” club  -

please note we are closed this coming monday. may 31, 2010.   regular rr wed. on june 2.  grass valley is open may 31, if you are looking for them, we have a link in our “links” section (makes sense, huh?).  it is worth the short drive!

welcome – new players this past monday/wednesday – andrew kreeger (not old enough to drive, but old enough to hit with authority; thank you to his father chris, or as we like to call him “chauffeur”); mark ballew (alleging he has not played much “since college”; well, it’s like riding a bike, mark, or falling off a log, only less painful); josh tyson (son of josh tyson); yes indeed father and son appeared and played!); joshua parker (san diego state tennis team member, back for the summer) and eric dougherty (soon to be freshman at nevada (unr? we did not confirm)).  glad to have you one and all.  return regularly and watch as your game improves rapidly!  all four found us on the internet.   john hanna, our official youth coach, managed to spend some time with andrew, in particular.

wednesday may 26, 2010 – closing out the month with 18 in the round robin.   group 4 – three players went 3-1, plenty of upsets.  j.p. solly was spotted training with not one but two potential mentors after the rr, so don’t anyone plan on having a cakewalk with him next week.  group 3 – underdog mark copeland prevails.  denied a clean sweep by madison “the spoiler” k.  sorry mark, we will punish her severely for this.  group 2anson k. had a bit of work to do but earns the ride to table 1.   group 1 – nobody felt like collecting victories except john hanna, going 3-0.  in defense of all the losers, all of john’s matches went 5 games.  and we are looking into several allegations of cheating, or, at least, more than the average expected amount of cheating, from john.   sam seo showed some excellent form throughout; another fine regular addition to the club.  if you are old enough to remember, sam is a former power inn road sacramento club member from 25+ years ago.

remember, group winners automatically move up a group the following wednesday.

“most improved”? – check out the rr results on the web site, and go to the “trends” option (bottom of the results page).  our semi-annual recognition covers january 1 to the end of june, and the “most improved” (1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards) is based upon ratings points increases.   we also have a “best record” award (1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes given), which is measured by the winning percentage.   typical requirement is the player must play at least 15 round robins during the period (we may reduce that to 14 this go around, as we lost a recent wednesday due to our anniversary celebration).

still a few t-shirts if you need one!  $13.  father’s day is coming soon.  also good for impressing your spouse, loved ones, unloved ones, significant and insignificant others.

enjoy the long weekend!

for wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call  bill at 916-275-0899 or tom at 530-613-0101 and let us know.  if you reach us, we will get you on a table.

also for wednesdays, tables permitting, if you wish to come and hit for fun (i.e. not participate in the round robin), that is fine and the club will charge $2 per person for that.  this is on a “hit or miss” basis.

results for 5/26/2010: latest round robin results

hello auburn table tennis club members  -

our 5th anniversary celebration turned out to be an evening of fun, to no one’s surprise, this past wed. night.

thank you’s in particular to:

bill indreboe – coordinating pizza and soda, and our keynote speaker, complete with podium and flags

doug vaughan – dishing up homemade brownies (anyone who missed those will need to make a special trip to grass valley club when he next serves a few)

larry scott – and company – bringing cookies (chocolate chippers, to be sure), and we don’t mean joola (hey, that’s the way we spell it in table tennis) and dora

john hanna – 2 (count ‘em 2) cakes with frosting commemorating our 5th anniversary; very nice john, sorry this did not buy you a spot in the king of the hill finals

nikolai zavastista – healthy snacks – bananas – by the dozen; delicious and good for you too; is he telling us something?

greg cehan, club co-founder, was recognized by the club, and also carried a recent report from co-founder tim aquino that tim intends to return stateside in august.  we presume the creditors have given up hope and it is safe to come home …

showing their sorry faces that have been missing for some time were chebu herrick and don straits, among others.

king of the hill – our handicapped ranking system seemed to work pretty well.  in the “consolation” bracket, chuck feyh survived to the finals, although tyler spesick overcame the points and pulled out a victory in this grouping.  on the king of the king of the hill, tom spesick had to get by anson, john hanna, mark copeland, and doug vaughan, to gain the right to play jp solly in the final.  jp, if this had only been best 4 out of 7, we think you could have pulled this out.  it was an “all spesick” king of the hill – congratulations.  next time make them eat more pizza and drink more soda before they hit.

doublesgrant connell/jp solly and patrice t/anson appear to have prevailed in their respective round robins.  no playoff blood match was recorded, but they all seemed pretty happy anyway.

ok all bets are off now – back to “regular” round robin wed. may 26th.  open play monday the 24th – see you all there!

see more pictures at http://www.auburntabletennis.com/pictures.htm .

for wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call  bill at 916-275-0899 or tom at 530-613-0101 and let us know.  if you reach us, we will get you on a table.

greetings and happy 5th anniversary auburn table tennis club members  -

wednesday may 19, 2010 – our 5th anniversary celebration evening at the club.  thank you to the rsvp’ers so far, that is helpful to know what our numbers will look like.   pizza and soda for all!  look for a blurb on this in the auburn journal soon.

hoping to see new faces, and we would not object to seeing some of those “infrequent” visitors – such as paula dwelly (ms. consistency), mel starkey (wicked backhand), gary cates, eric andrus, don straits, kirk henderson, jeff graden, jerry silverman (hopefully fully recovered from the ugly “crash into the window incident”) , the cavannas (eric, vince (“which hand will he use to hold the paddle tonight?”), even gene and robert),  jerry sacks (if he is not on a cruise somewhere), jay and evan cotrone, and this is just a list that quickly comes to mind.

t-shirt raffle!  oh yes.  don’t be left out!  must be present the 19th to win.

we will hit some doubles.  we will hit some “king of the hill” (handicapped – so everyone will be competitive).  we will hit some “open play.”  bill indreboe is coordinating, with assistance from some others.  please rsvp on this, if you can, to wkochenderfer@cs.com.    guaranteed to have some fun.  flyers for this event were distributed wed. may 5, also sent out via email.  if you know someone who needs this brand of cruelty, bring them along.  if there are enough rsvps that request it, we will set up the robot.

desserts?  oh yes.  rsvp on this too.  we need 1 more volunteer to cook something up for a post-pizza snack (brownies, cookies, something suitable).

newly joining us for play this past week – monday – lori lawrence and jason torrefranca.   nice to see you and welcome to the club!

t-shirts unless you win one in the raffle on the 19th – are $13.  fifteen or so left, so pick one up soon. testimonials are rolling in: “i think it would help my game in both table tennis as well as pickleball and i think a light blue shirt will make me look faster.” so says rick close.  take it as gospel, better than a technicolor dreamcoat.

sacramento tournament – may 15th -  good luck to all participating.  linked at our website, for directions, if you want to watch (no admission fee, and the site is near arco arena, so darned easy to get to).

wednesday may 12 results:  a send off to the tournament, perhaps.  group 1: three players went 2-2, john hanna wins with 3-1.  sam seo finds himself now in the “gang of 6” regulars in the 1600s!   group 2: tom spesick loses only one game on his path to table one, and has served notice to table one that all rating points are now in jeopardy.   group 3:  billy tang and abhijeet lall had to go down to the wire with a 3-2 edging by billy to take the table!   group 4:  her first table win in a young career, madison k. sweeps the group.  word on the street is she was still flying high 24 hours later, telling anyone who would listen about being “on fire” wednesday night.  we thought the fire department might have to be called.

speaking of abhijeet lall – heads out in a few days for 3 months abroad; bon voyage and we shall see you at the end of the summer!

for wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call  bill at 916-275-0899 or tom at 530-613-0101 and let us know.  if you reach us, we will get you on a table.

also for wednesdays, tables permitting, if you wish to come and hit for fun (i.e. not participate in the round robin), that is fine and the club will charge $2 per person for that.  this is on a “hit or miss” basis.

results for 5/12/2010: latest round robin results

hello and welcome warm weather we’ve missed at the auburn table tennis club -

newly joining us for play this past week – monday – giovanni fuentes (young son and fine new hitter, of steve fuentes), and debora mower (rekindling an interest in the sport after a multi-decade sabbatical).   on wednesday, ricky ward found us, with assistance from school mate abhijeet lall.  also, not exactly new but long overdue, this past wednesday, mike gaynor fixed the gps on his car, remembered our address, and for the first time in about a year hit the round robin.  nice to see you one and all.

in memoriam – we learned this past week that one of the original club members john jensen passed away in late april.  the archives report that john was the 23rd (i.e. #23) in the first “monday” group (which puts him in the hallowed category of a founding member).

from our first club president (current treasurer) tim aquino: “john was, sincerely, one of the nicest individuals i have ever met in or out of table tennis. he was the president of the lincoln hills club.  i hear that the attitude of many of us sour as we age. there was none of that with john. always a good winner and equally as nice when losing. it was always a struggle playing him but win or lose it was always a real pleasure. i am saddened at his passing.”

old boy” bill indreboe noted “first time we played a match, i believe (really) we played about 30 deuces on table 1.  tim was watching i think because we took so long to finish.”

thank you john for sharing some time and fun with us.

wednesday may 19, 2010 – our 5th anniversary celebration evening at the club.  we will hit some doubles.  we will hit some “king of the hill” (handicapped – so everyone will be competitive).  we will hit some “open play.”   we will hit the soda and pizza.  bill indreboe is coordinating, with assistance from some others.  just for a head count, please rsvp on this, if you can, to wkochenderfer@cs.com.    guaranteed to have some fun.  flyers for this event were distributed wed. may 5, also sent out via email.  we do hope to attract some visitors, so if you know someone who might have been thinking about this, here is your chance to be a hero.  if there are enough rsvps that request it, we will set up the robot for people to hit.  now that’s what we call fun!

desserts?  oh yes.  rsvp on this too, quick, before you are drafted into service.  we need 3 volunteers to cook something up for a post-pizza snack (brownies, cookies, something suitable).  nothing dramatic.  be the first kid on your block to sign up and you will be entered for the t-shirt raffle on the 19th!

t-shirts, did you mention t-shirts?   heck yes.  they’re beautiful, and they improve your play.  a paltry $13.  see these on the web site or see them on the players at the club.  wear the shirt while handing out auburn table tennis club business cards!  wear them around town!  wear them to work!

tournament promotions.   we have a few “regulars” who go to local tournaments.  and then we have some “irregulars” who go to lots of them.  recently (last weekend), john hanna found himself the subject of a pre-tournament press release.  in the “some top players to watch” portion of the icc (milpitas club) blurb, pimping the 250 plus player turnout, check out the last bullet point below:

                        “some top players to watch

·         top juniors from china - liu xibo, wang steven, shen hailong

·         u.s. national men's team members and olympians - reed barney, nguyen khoa

·         indian national men's team members - kashyap anal, gidla jiten

·         iranian national men's team member - molla zaman

·         top current u.s. national junior players -timothy wang, preiss austin, zhang lily

·         former us national junior & cadet team members - malek auria, runyan trever

·         top junior from canada - teddy wu

·         current us no.1 - u 20 girls, u 12 boys - tian maggie, krish avvari

·         all time favorites - dora kurimay, brana vlasic

·         us coaching advisory committee chairman - richard mcafee ( 2200 rated )

·         nine usatt finals (six first places) in 2009/10 and ”giant killer” – john hanna

yes we’re so proud of our giant killer.  way to put the fear into them, john.

monday protocol reminder(s) - “open play” format is the rule for the day.  if you are practicing (not playing a match), this is fine (and encouraged) – but keep in mind to rotate off the table in roughly the same time as a match is being played.  this will help keep players moving through and to tables.  easy way to gauge your time is to observe when an adjacent table starts and finished a match.   if you win your match and wish to stay on the table, that is fine; invite the challenger on!  but do rotate out then, if there are more than 2 players waiting for a table.

if we are over run with players, we will announce the request to play matches best 2 out of 3, for 15 or 20 minutes, so we can keep things moving.  if you are playing doubles, stick to best 3 out of 5 at all times.

new players – don’t be bashful about asking someone to hit with you, or to solicit a bit of advice or a tip here and there.

wednesday round robin wrap up -  may 5th – another 21 players, plus one more for open play.  three players gaining close to or exactly 50 rating points!  all of last week’s group winners appear to claim their “next table up” prize.

group 4:  ricky ward ties with mark copeland, but won the head-to-head match, and moves up next week.  what’s in the water over there at wm. jessup?  these players are all good.  group 3:  nikolai z. administers some beatings and wins the group.  we note jp solly is up almost 100 points, though, over the last 2 weeks.   group 2: mostly played according to the seeding – anson k. prevails, taking some time during a break to offer tips to group 1 players facing hardbat sensation abhijeet lall.

group 1:  seeding meant nothing here.  of the 10 matches, 5 were upsets.  some sweat was sweat and possibly one or two borderline inappropriate exclamations were heard as everyone battled hard with abhijeet.   a 600 point rating difference means nothing.  abhijeet managed to take at least one game from each player, and also eked out one narrow match victory.  john hanna and bill k. went 3-1 in the group, with a 5th game deciding their match and the group winner (which went to bill).  this was courteously noted by john as being a hat trick of 3 wednesdays in a row that the club president has won table one.

for wed. night, - if you will be late (after 6:45 pm), be sure to call  bill at 916-275-0899 or tom at 530-613-0101 and let us know.  if you reach us, we will get you on a table.

also for wednesdays, tables permitting, if you wish to come and hit for fun (i.e. not participate in the round robin), that is fine and the club will charge $2 per person for that.  this is on a “hit or miss” basis.
